When Stress Shows Up In Your Body

Stress begins in the brain. Or at least, that's what conventional wisdom says. And maybe it does. Begin there, that is. Too much thinking. Too much worrying. Too many thoughts racing around in too little space. But the notion that stress is "all in your mind" is long past its expiration date and is in dire need of a serious upgrade. For example: Sometimes stress shows up in your shoulders. Your stomach. Your jaw. Your restless feet. Your inability to relax even when you are bone tired. That’s because stress is not just a thought. It’s a whole-body experience. And sometimes the most useful support is not something that knocks you out. It’s something that helps your body get the message that it is safe to stand down. Quick Answer Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine combines two well-studied ingredients to support a calmer nervous system without leaving you sleepy, foggy, or checked out. It was designed for the moments when your body needs to unwind, but your brain still needs to function. At a Glance Stress can be physical as well as mental. Feeling tense, restless, overstimulated, or “wired but tired” may be signs that your nervous system needs a little help shifting gears. L-Theanine supports relaxed brain activity while helping preserve alertness and focus.2,3 Oral lavender has been studied for relaxation, stress support, and sleep quality.4–6 Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine is designed for calm during the day and easier unwinding at night—not as a sedative or a conventional sleep aid. Why Stress Can Feel So Physical Your mind and body are not running separate stress programs. When your brain decides that something requires your attention, it sends signals throughout the body. Whether that is a genuine emergency, a packed calendar, a difficult conversation, or simply too much stimulation, your nervous system prepares you to respond. When your stress response kicks in, you may notice: Muscles tighten Breathing gets shallower Your stomach may feel unsettled You become more alert, more reactive, and less able to simply be still. That response is useful when you need to slam on the brakes, avoid a falling object, or get yourself out of danger. It is less useful when it stays switched on long after the danger has passed. And that is the problem for many of us. We are not necessarily having a crisis. We are just spending too much of the day physically braced for one. That is why a calmer nervous system can make such a difference. Not because it makes life’s demands disappear. Because it can help your body stop treating every demand as an emergency. Calm Doesn’t Have to Mean Checked Out For a lot of people, this is the catch. They would love to feel less tense, less reactive, and less as if their internal alarm system has been going off all day. But they do not want to feel drugged. They have work to do. Conversations to have. Decisions to make. Kids to pick up. A life to participate in. They don’t want to trade stress for sleepiness. That’s one reason L-theanine has attracted so much interest. How L-Theanine Supports Relaxation Without Sedation L-Theanine is an amino acid found naturally in green tea. It has been studied for its ability to support a relaxed state while helping maintain alertness and mental clarity. In other words, it is not about shutting your brain down. It is about helping it stop acting as if every email, traffic jam, and minor inconvenience is a five-alarm emergency.1,2 Researchers have also looked at L-theanine’s effects on alpha brain waves—patterns of brain activity associated with a relaxed but awake state. In one human study, a 200 mg dose increased alpha-wave activity within about 40 to 60 minutes.3 That is a very different goal from sedation. Sedation says, “Let’s turn the lights down.” Relaxation says, “Let’s turn the volume down.” One makes it harder to show up. The other may make it easier. And that distinction matters, especially for people whose stress tends to show up in the body first: tight muscles, restlessness, overstimulation, and difficulty winding down after a long day. Why Add Lavender? Most of us know lavender as a scent. A candle. A bath product. A sachet your grandmother kept in a drawer somewhere. But lavender is more than a pleasant smell. Oral lavender oil—particularly oil from Lavandula angustifolia—has been studied for its ability to support relaxation, a healthy stress response, and sleep quality.4–6 That does not mean lavender is a sleeping pill. In fact, one of the things that makes oral lavender interesting is that it may support calm without simply flattening you. The goal is not to make you feel dull or disconnected. The goal is to help your nervous system move out of that wound-up, over-alert state that makes everything feel harder than it needs to. Why Combine Lavender and L-Theanine? Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine pairs 200 mg of L-theanine with French lavender oil in a once-daily capsule. Think of it as a two-part approach. L-Theanine helps support that relaxed-but-alert state. Lavender helps support the body’s ability to settle. Together, they are meant for the person who wants to exhale—but not disappear. The Same System That Keeps You On During the Day Can Keep You Up at Night Stress does not always respect business hours. During the day, it may make you feel tense, impatient, scattered, or physically unable to settle into what you’re doing. At night, it may look different—but feel strangely familiar. You finally have a chance to rest. The day is over. Nothing urgent is happening. And yet your body has not gotten the memo. Your mind may not even be racing. But you still feel a little activated. A little restless. A little too awake for someone who was dragging themselves through the afternoon. That’s the “wired but tired” experience. It is not a formal diagnosis. It is simply a phrase people use when exhaustion and activation somehow manage to coexist. And it makes sense. The nervous system does not have an on/off switch. It is constantly adjusting to the demands being placed on it. When stress has kept the system on high alert for much of the day, transitioning into rest may take more than turning off the television and hoping for the best. That is where a formula like Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine may fit. Supporting Relaxation During the Day and at Night During the day, it is meant to support a calmer, more grounded state without interfering with focus or alertness. At night, that same support for relaxation may help make the transition into rest feel easier. Not because it forces sleep. Because it may help you become less physiologically prepared for battle at 11:30 p.m. Research on L-theanine and lavender also suggests that consistent use may support sleep quality over time—particularly when stress and difficulty unwinding are part of the problem.2,5,6 This Is Not Really a Sleep Supplement That may sound like an odd thing to say when we have just been talking about sleep. But it is important. Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine is not designed to knock you out at bedtime. It is not a heavy-duty sleep formula, and it is not intended to replace the basics that make sleep possible: a reasonably consistent schedule, darkness, a cool room, and not treating your phone like it is a life-support device. Its real job is more fundamental. It supports relaxation. And relaxation happens to be useful at night. For some people, that may mean taking it when they feel tense or overstimulated during the day. For others, it may mean taking it in the evening, when they know they have a tendency to carry the day straight into bed with them. Either way, the point is the same: Calm the body. Keep the mind clear. And give your nervous system a better chance to do what it already knows how to do. What Kind of Stress Are You Dealing With? Not all stress feels the same. Sometimes it is mostly mental. Your thoughts are racing. You are replaying a conversation from three days ago. You are imagining fourteen possible future disasters, thirteen of which will never happen. That is one kind of stress. But sometimes the story is less about thoughts and more about your body. You feel wound up. Your shoulders are tight. You’re fidgety. You feel overstimulated by ordinary things. You can’t quite come down from the day, even when there is no particular thought you need to solve. That is the lane Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine was designed for. Calm My Brain vs. Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine BrainMD’s Calm My Brain is intended more for acute mental stress—racing thoughts, anxious mental chatter, and the feeling that your brain has too many browser tabs open. Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine is aimed more at the body’s stress response: tension, restlessness, overstimulation, and difficulty unwinding. Of course, real life is not always that tidy. Sometimes the body is tense because the mind is racing. Sometimes the mind races because the body has been braced for impact all day. But it can still be helpful to ask a simple question: Is my stress mostly living in my thoughts—or mostly living in my body? If it is the second one, this formula may be worth considering.   Calm My Brain Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine Stress tends to feel Mental Physical Think Racing thoughts, mental chatter Tension, restlessness, overstimulation Primary focus Acute mental stress Relaxation without feeling sleepy   What Should You Expect? The first thing to understand is that relaxation and sleep are not the same thing. How Quickly Does L-Theanine Work? You may notice a sense of feeling less tense, less physically “on edge,” or more able to settle within the first hour after taking it. Research on L-theanine suggests relaxation-supporting effects may begin within about 30 to 60 minutes.3 But that does not mean every benefit appears on a stopwatch. Stress resilience, nighttime relaxation, and sleep quality are usually more like fitness than like flipping a switch. Your nervous system responds to what you do consistently. For that reason, Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine can be used as part of a daily routine—especially if you know that tension, overstimulation, or trouble unwinding are recurring parts of your life. How to Take Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine One capsule provides 200 mg of L-theanine and 40 mg of Pharmako CPO® French lavender oil powder. BrainMD recommends taking one capsule daily, ideally on an empty stomach. You can take it during the day when you want calm without sacrificing clarity. Or you can take it in the evening when you are ready to begin letting the day go. The timing matters less than the purpose. You are not trying to check out. You are just trying to feel like yourself again. __________________________________________________   Frequently Asked Questions Will Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine make me sleepy? It is designed to promote relaxation without making you feel sedated, foggy, or mentally checked out. L-Theanine has been studied for supporting a relaxed-but-alert state, which is why this formula can be used during the day when you still want to stay focused and present.2,3 Can I take it during the day or at night? Either. During the day, it may be helpful when stress is showing up as tension, restlessness, or overstimulation. At night, it may support a more relaxed transition into rest—especially if you tend to carry the day’s stress into bed with you. How fast does it work? Some people may notice a more relaxed feeling within the first hour. Research on L-theanine suggests relaxation-supporting effects can begin in about 30 to 60 minutes.3 Other benefits, including support for nighttime relaxation and sleep quality, may build with consistent use over time. Is it habit-forming? No. Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine is a dietary supplement, not a sedative medication, and it is not considered habit-forming. Can I take it every day? Yes. One capsule daily can be used as part of an ongoing routine for nervous-system support, or when you know you are heading into a particularly stressful stretch. Can I take it with medications? If you take prescription medication, have a medical condition, or are under a healthcare professional’s care, check with your clinician before adding any new supplement to your routine. The same goes for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. The Bottom Line You do not have to be in crisis to want to feel calmer. You do not have to be having a panic attack to notice that your body is holding too much tension. And you do not have to choose between feeling relaxed and being able to function. Sometimes the most useful kind of support is not the kind that makes you sleepy. It is the kind that helps you unclench your jaw, drop your shoulders, take a fuller breath, and move through your day without feeling as if your nervous system is one bad email away from sounding the alarm. That is what Relaxing Lavender + L-Theanine was designed to support: Calm for your body. Clarity for your mind.   ___________________________________________________________ References Kimura K, Ozeki M, Juneja LR, Ohira H. Here Are the 9 Vital Functions of Vitamin D for Your Health

Here Are the 9 Vital Functions of Vitamin D for Your Health

Vitamin D, which is technically a hormone rather than a vitamin, is a crucial nutrient. Unfortunately, many Americans – even those who eat a good diet – are deficient in vitamin D.¹ Though definitions of vitamin D deficiency can vary, experts agree that it has nearly reached epidemic status. Analysis of the ongoing national survey data from the US Centers for Disease Control indicates that a majority of Americans may not be getting sufficient vitamin D. One way to get a natural vitamin D boost is from exposure to sunlight. But since we're wearing more sunscreen while outside and spending more time inside, our levels of vitamin D have fallen in recent decades. Why does that matter? Some research has linked vitamin D deficiency to serious, long-term health issues.² Those who think of vitamin D only as the “sunshine vitamin” may fail to fully understand the significant ways vitamin D affects their brain, body and overall health.³ Let's take a closer look at how vitamin D works in key areas of the brain and body, as well as how to increase levels of this essential vitamin...naturally! Here Are 9 Vital Functions of Vitamin D Immunity Vitamin D receptors are found all over the body, including the immune cells. Research has clearly shown that vitamin D deficiency is part of the seasonal nature of cold and flu outbreaks⁴ – less sunlight means less vitamin D, which can lead to lower immunity and more illness. Bones It’s well-documented that vitamin D is essential for the proper absorption of calcium, and it’s been shown to greatly reduce fracture risk in two ways. First, it helps with the formation of stronger bones; second, vitamin D helps improve balance and prevent falls by enhancing muscle contraction.⁵ Muscles One of the byproducts of vitamin D’s breakdown, called 1,25(OH)2D, enters muscle cells and affects the nucleus. Once there, the vitamin D metabolite enhances the cell’s contraction ability. Since muscles work by contraction and relaxation, a muscle’s ability to contract is essential to its strength and response to outside forces. As such, vitamin D helps make muscles stronger in a very direct way. Lungs As many studies indicate, vitamin D plays a role in keeping our lungs healthy due to vitamin D possessing a range of anti-inflammatory properties – with greater concentrations of vitamin D resulting in greater lung health benefits.⁶ Heart Research has demonstrated an inverse relationship between vitamin D levels in the blood and high blood pressure (HBP or hypertension). In other words, the lower the vitamin D, the higher the blood pressure. The excess strain and resulting damage from high blood pressure can cause the coronary arteries serving the heart to slowly narrow and harden, greatly increasing the risk of a heart attack. Kidneys Because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, it helps to regulate kidney function and plays a very beneficial role in treating serious kidney issues.⁷ Mood When it comes to being happy, the scientific evidence is clear. The lower your vitamin D levels, the more likely you are to feel blue rather than happy. Vitamin D deficiency has long been associated with higher incidences of low mood. Interestingly, in a 2014 study, the positive effect of vitamin D3 on mood was comparable to the effects of the anti-depressants.⁸ Weight Loss When you don’t have enough vitamin D, you can feel hungry all the time, no matter how much you eat. That's because low levels of vitamin D can interfere with the effectiveness of leptin, the appetite hormone that tells you when you're full. When vitamin D is replenished and back to normal levels, leptin’s actions are restored, thus creating feelings of satiety and aiding in weight loss. Cognitive Function In the past few years, many studies have linked shortage of vitamin D with cognitive issues in older men and women. Research has demonstrated that vitamin D has a variety of neuroprotective roles, including helping to rid the brain of beta-amyloid, an abnormal protein that is believed to be a major cause of severe memory issues.⁹ Other studies have shown that seniors with very low levels of vitamin D are at an increased risk of serious, long-term memory issues. Recommended Daily Vitamin D In the US, the current recommended daily dose of vitamin D is 600 IU. However, most experts agree that this is well below the physiological needs of most individuals. Some experts have suggested that all adults should take at least 2000 IU of vitamin D daily, but for many people, this daily dose doesn’t raise their vitamin D levels into a healthy range. What Can Help? Infrared Brain Light Cap: How Red Light Therapy Can Help You!

Infrared Brain Light Cap: How Red Light Therapy Can Help You!

Maybe you’ve heard about red light therapy – the non-invasive treatment that’s taking the wellness world by storm. But what is it and can it really help you? Let’s take a closer look at how red light therapy works and its potential benefits. What Is Red Light Therapy? Red light therapy uses low-level wavelengths of red and near-infrared light (NIR) to support the body’s natural recovery processes. Unlike ultraviolet (UV) light, which can damage the skin, red light penetrates the skin safely. It’s commonly delivered through LED panels, handheld devices, or full-body beds, allowing the light to reach the skin and underlying tissues without heat or discomfort. At a cellular level, red light therapy works by stimulating the mitochondria – the “power plants” of our cells. The light helps mitochondria produce more adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a type of natural energy that cells need to function and repair themselves. With increased cellular energy, the body may be better equipped to improve circulation, repair damaged tissues, and promote overall cellular health. Potential Benefits of Red Light Therapy Red light therapy has gained popularity for its wide range of potential benefits. Many people use it to support skin health, as it may help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne, and uneven skin tone by encouraging collagen production. Others turn to red light therapy for muscle recovery, joint comfort, and reduced soreness after exercise, making it popular among athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Beyond skincare and physical recovery, red light therapy is also being explored for its potential effects on mood,¹ sleep, and overall wellness. Some users report feeling more relaxed or energized after red light therapy sessions. Why Do Red Light Wavelengths Matter? Red light therapy works by delivering specific wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin and interact with cells in different ways. Each wavelength is measured in nanometers (nm) and determines how deeply the light can travel into the body and which tissues it affects. Shorter red wavelengths, typically around 630–660 nm, are absorbed more readily by the skin’s surface layers. These wavelengths are commonly associated with skin-focused benefits such as supporting collagen production, improving skin tone, and helping reduce the appearance of fine lines and blemishes. Because they primarily target the epidermis and upper dermis, they’re often used in facial and cosmetic treatments. Longer wavelengths, particularly NIR light in the 810–880 nm range, penetrate much deeper into the body. This allows them to interact with muscles, joints, and connective tissues, making them popular for recovery and overall cellular health. When combined, red and near-infrared wavelengths create a more comprehensive therapy by addressing both surface-level skin health and deeper structural recovery, which is why many modern red light therapy devices include multiple wavelengths for full-body benefits. Red Light Therapy and Brain Health Red light therapy has potential positive effects on brain health, particularly through a process known as photobiomodulation. When specific red and near-infrared wavelengths are applied to the head, they can penetrate the scalp and skull to reach brain tissue. Once absorbed, this light interacts with mitochondria inside neurons, helping support cellular energy production. This increase in cellular energy may enhance overall brain function, supporting processes such as focus, mental clarity, and cognitive performance. In addition to energy support, red light therapy may influence brain health by improving blood flow. NIR light has been shown to encourage vasodilation, which increases oxygen and nutrient delivery to brain cells while assisting in the removal of metabolic waste. These effects have sparked interest in red light therapy as a supportive tool for stress management, mood regulation, and age-related cognitive health. While research is ongoing, early findings suggest that targeted light therapy could play a valuable role in maintaining brain resilience and optimizing neurological wellness² as part of a broader brain-health routine. Brain In Focus: Here Are the Best Benefits of Lion's Mane Mushroom Chocolate

Brain In Focus: Here Are the Best Benefits of Lion's Mane Mushroom Chocolate

In a fascinating and much-discussed article that appeared in the December 18, 2004, issue of the British Medical Journal, scientists examined all the research on foods and health to see if they could put together the theoretically ideal meal that, if you ate it every day, would significantly reduce your risk for cardiovascular issues. (11) After doing all the calculations, they came up with a theoretical meal that, eaten daily, would not just reduce cardiovascular risk, but reduce it by a staggering 75 percent (there’s not a pill in the world that can do that). The ingredients of this mythical Polymeal? Wine, fish, nuts, garlic, fruits, vegetables, and… wait for it… chocolate. In fact, they even figured out the risk-reduction contribution of each of the individual foods; the actual percentage of reduction in risk for cardiovascular issues from eating 100 g a day of cocoa-rich chocolate (about which more in a moment) turned out to be a pretty impressive 21 percent. Chocolate is definitely one of life’s greatest pleasures, a near-perfect combination of indulgence and nostalgia. But what if that piece of chocolate could also boost your focus, sharpen your mind, and even support your heart health? Well, it can. And that’s exactly the promise behind BrainMD’s newest innovations—Brain In Focus and the reformulated Brain In Love chocolate bars. These aren’t just desserts; they’re functional snacks that pack serious scientific benefits into every bite. Let’s explore what makes these bars so remarkable, from their cutting-edge ingredients to the research-backed benefits they deliver. Lion’s Mane Benefits: The Nootropics Advantage Brain In Focus dark chocolate bar features Lion’s Mane mushrooms, a powerhouse ingredient that’s been stealing the spotlight in the world of nootropics. For those not familiar with nootropics they are substances that are believed to enhance cognitive function, including memory, focus, creativity, and mental clarity, while also supporting brain health. They are often referred to as “smart drugs” or “brain boosters.” And Lion’s Mane is one of the most researched and the most effective. Like many natural substances, Lion’s Mane has been used for centuries in traditional Asian medicine, but modern science is finally unlocking its potential. Here’s what you need to know about what Lion’s Mane benefits: Cognitive Support: Clinical studies have shown that Lion’s Mane can improve focus, memory, and overall cognitive function. The magic lies in a compound called L-ergothioneine (or L-Ergo), a powerful antioxidant that supports brain health by reducing oxidative stress and promoting neural regeneration. Brain In Focus contains 200 milligrams of Lion’s Mane per serving—a dose that aligns with the amounts used in clinical studies. (6) Quick and Long-Term Benefits of Lion's Mane: Regular consumption of Lion’s Mane has been linked to increased serum levels of L-Ergo in as little as one week, with measurable cognitive improvements seen after just three months. (6) Anti-Aging and Cardiovascular Health: Higher L-Ergo levels are associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular issues and improved overall longevity. So, while your brain reaps the rewards, your heart benefits too. (2) The inclusion of Lion’s Mane mushrooms turns Brain In Focus into more than just a chocolate bar. It’s a delicious way to incorporate lion's mane benefits and nootropics into your daily routine. (2,4) Why Dark Chocolate Is the Perfect Healthy Treat Dark chocolate itself is no stranger to health accolades. (3) I included dark chocolate in my book, The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth, where I also wrote that “high-quality dark chocolate (60% cocoa or higher) is rich in flavanols, compounds that offer a range of benefits.” (12) Note that both BrainMD chocolate bars are made from premium dark chocolate with 60% cocoa and are considered a superfood! This percentage of cocoa has been shown to offer: Cardiovascular Support: Flavanols improve blood flow, reduce clotting, and support healthy blood pressure by boosting nitric oxide production. (10,7,5) Cognitive Enhancement: Studies have linked dark chocolate consumption to improved memory and reduced risk of severe memory issues. Even a small amount—10 grams a day—can have measurable effects on cognitive performance. (9,4,2) Mood Boosting: Let’s not forget the immediate joy that comes from savoring a piece of dark chocolate. It’s the ultimate mood enhancer. (8) BrainMD’s bars take dark chocolate’s inherent benefits and supercharge them. Both Brain In Focus and Brain In Love are sugar-free, vegan, and sweetened with allulose—a natural sweetener that doesn’t spike blood sugar levels and may even have some additional metabolic benefits. These bars are designed for anyone who wants to indulge without compromise. Dark Chocolate for Heart Health The reformulated Brain In Love dark chocolate bar is a tribute to the well-established link between heart health and emotional well-being. Rich in flavanols, this dark chocolate bar is a delicious way to nurture your cardiovascular system while indulging your senses. While it doesn’t include Lion’s Mane, its high cocoa content (60%, just as I recommended in my book) ensures you’re getting all the antioxidant power you need to support a healthy heart. Cocoa flavanols have gotten a lot of attention in the nutrition world and a big part of the reason is the Kuna Indians. The Kuna live off the coast of Panama and are unusual in that their blood pressure tends to stay pretty much the same throughout their life. Unlike Americans and Europeans, the Kuna do not experience the dangerous rise in blood pressure that accompanies aging and increases the risk for both heart and blood sugar issues. Some researchers—including Normal Hollenberg at Harvard Medical School—think it’s because of cocoa. The Kuna Indians drink about five cups of the stuff every day. One study, published in 2011 in the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ), found that the highest levels of chocolate consumption were associated with a 37% reduction in severe cardiovascular issues. (6) The researchers concluded that “levels of chocolate consumption seem to be associated with a substantial reduction in the risk of cardiometabolic disorders.” Functional Snacking for the Win What sets BrainMD’s dark chocolate bars apart from the competition? It’s the fusion of indulgence and purpose. In a market flooded with sugary, nutritionally empty snacks, these bars are a revelation. Here’s why: Sugar-Free and Safe: Sweetened with allulose, they’re safe for those managing blood sugar levels. Vegan and Dairy-Free: Perfect for plant-based eaters. Clinically Dosed: The Lion’s Mane in Brain In Focus isn’t just a sprinkle; it’s a science-backed clinically meaningful dose designed to deliver results. The Science of Smart Indulgence In a world where functional foods are on the rise, BrainMD’s dark chocolate bars are leading the charge. Whether you’re looking to enhance your focus with lion's mane benefits, support your heart, or simply savor a guilt-free treat, these bars deliver on all fronts. They’re more than a snack; they’re a statement—that indulgence and wellness can go hand in hand. So go ahead, treat yourself. Your brain, heart, and taste buds will thank you.   Scientific References: Hollenberg, N. K., & Fisher, N. D. (2007). Cocoa to reduce blood pressure. Journal of Hypertension, 25(8), 1745-1750. Whether it's at work, school, or home, the ability to concentrate on tasks without getting distracted can make a significant difference in productivity and overall well-being. Attention issues aren’t just limited to children; more adults are struggling with staying organized, completing tasks, and maintaining focus. Understanding how to overcome these attention challenges can lead to better outcomes in all areas of life. Common Attention and Focus Issues Some of the most common symptoms that indicate attention and focus problems include: Impulsivity Distractibility Restlessness Forgetfulness Difficulty staying on task Procrastination Several factors can aggravate these attention problems, including a poor diet, exposure to environmental toxins, insufficient sleep, high stress levels, and lack of physical activity. 7 Unexpected Health Benefits of Green Tea

7 Unexpected Health Benefits of Green Tea

Over the past decade, the popularity of green tea has exploded. Experts say that its touted health benefits are driving consumer demand. You can now find green tea on the menu at most restaurants and cafes, in nearly all grocery stores, as a supplement, and in beauty products. Is health-nut-driven enthusiasm for green tea all hype, or does it have real health benefits? The combination of animal and human studies on green tea published so far indicate remarkable health benefits. In fact, due to its many bioactive compounds, you may want to swap out your coffee for green tea! About Green Tea Derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, unlike black and oolong teas, which are oxidized to varying degrees, green tea is only minimally oxidized. It’s processed using traditional methods (sun-drying, basket-firing, or pan-firing) or modern methods (oven-drying, tumbling, or steaming). The result is a rich and unique profile of polyphenols with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity that’s largely responsible for its myriad health benefits, according to research. Chief among these polyphenolic compounds is a catechin called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). An amino acid called theanine (or l-theanine) and small amount of caffeine also contribute to some of green tea’s brain and body benefits. Here are some of the most-studied health benefits of green tea… 7 Unexpected Health Benefits of Green Tea 1. Heart Health  The cardiovascular benefits of green tea consumption are widely recognized. One study followed more than 40,000 participants aged 40-79 for 11 years. It found that those who drank at least five cups of green tea per day had a lower risk of mortality due to heart health issues. Additional studies indicate that the polyphenols in green tea may support health blood pressure levels, as well as help to improve vascular health and better blood flow. A study looking at supplementation with green tea’s EGCG showed that it may support healthy total and LDL cholesterol levels too. 2. Antioxidant Protection The polyphenols found in green tea have substantial free radical scavenging activity and may protect cells from DNA damage caused by reactive oxygen species. Of course, this can help stave off several health issues that result from damaged cells. The antioxidant action can help protect the skin from damaging exposure to the sun. Currently, there’s a clinical trial underway examining how green tea can protect prostate health. Epidemiological studies indicate that green tea consumption is associated with breast health protection too. 3. Relaxation and Cognition A nice cup of green tea is a great way to relieve stress and boost your brain function. Green tea’s l-theanine works by way of nerve cell receptors for GABA, glutamate, and other neurotransmitters, and has calming effects. It helps to increase dopamine and the production of alpha waves in the brain, which create a pleasant, relaxed state. In clinical research, l-theanine has been found to help boost attention, mood, cognition, and even quality of sleep. However, it doesn’t diminish alertness. Green tea’s caffeine works well with l-theanine to enhance brain function, including mood, vigilance, reaction time, and memory. Some people have a more even, focused energy that allows for better productivity when they drink green tea, compared with coffee, which has about three times the amount of caffeine. 4. Supports Healthy Blood Sugar Those who drink green tea may have more stable blood sugar levels. A randomized controlled trial found a correlation between green tea consumption and decreased fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels. Additionally, a 2017 review of dietary polyphenol studies associated green tea (as part of the Mediterranean-type of diet), with a reduced risk of blood sugar health issues. 5. Protects Memory  Green tea may help to keep your memory sharp as you age. One small study suggests that green tea can enhance a person’s working memory and other cognitive functions. The double-blind study found that green tea may be helpful in addressing cognitive impairments associated with neurodegenerative memory issues. A meta-analysis of 26 observational studies suggested that daily tea drinking is associated with a decreased risk of cognitive decline in the elderly. 6. Improves Breath  A published review of two articles found that green tea can reduce volatile sulfur compound-producing bacteria. In particular, EGCG had inhibitory effects on the growth or adhesion of several common oral bacteria. The review states, “Green tea can reduce halitosis through rinsing and antimicrobial effect.” 7. Healthy Weight  Green tea holds promise in supporting healthy weight. As mentioned, green tea has a mild amount of caffeine, but it still contains enough to have an effect. Caffeine has been found to aid fat burning and improve exercise performance in numerous studies. What’s more, it works synergistically with EGCG, which also has metabolism-boosting effects. However, the studies used concentrated amounts of EGCG, more than what you’d consume from drinking tea. More research is needed. Take Time Out for Tea Probably the best immediate health benefit from drinking green tea comes from simply taking a tea break. Enjoy! [wc_box color="inverse" text_align="left" margin_top="" margin_bottom="" class=""] Green Tea Tips for Maximum Benefit  Let boiling water cool for a moment before steeping as boiling water can destroy EGCG content. Add some lemon! Vitamin C makes the tea’s catechins easier to absorb. (Conversely, dairy makes it harder to absorb them.) Quality matters. A high-quality green tea usually has more nutrients. 7 Ways To Keep Calm While Preparing For Vacation

7 Ways To Keep Calm While Preparing For Vacation

Now that summer is officially here, it’s that time of year again…VACATION! You’ve worked hard all year so it’s time for a break and time to relax. Time off is essential to personal wellbeing, professional success, business performance, and more, but nearly half of American employees don't use all of their vacation days each year! Research has even demonstrated that taking a vacation can have similar biological benefits to your health as meditating. In short, vacations are good for your health. So why don’t more people take vacations? Often the reason is that planning and preparing for a vacation is too stressful an experience. It sounds like extra work, having to prepare for vacation. It can be easy to get caught up in the stress of everyday life, even in the summer. How do you transition from a stress-inducing life to relaxation mode? It’s difficult to get into the right mindset, but you can more calmly prepare yourself for vacation if you follow a few simple steps: 7 of the Best Ways to Keep Your Vacation Prep Stress-free  1. Have Realistic Expectations Resist the urge to plan every minute of your vacation and maintain realistic expectations about your trip. Your flight could be delayed. It might rain the afternoon you plan to go jet skiing. Mishaps and meltdowns happen, but they don’t have to ruin a trip. If you expect that things will go less than perfectly, you will be better prepared to handle whatever does happen. 2. Focus On The Positive This can feel "easier said than done," but it's very effective. As mentioned above, a lot can go wrong when you travel. However, as with life in general, negative things won't feel like they have as much power when you notice the silver lining of the situation. For example, if your flight is delayed, focus on how you have extra time to catch up on reading a novel you enjoy. 3. Plan Ahead There is nothing more stressful than realizing the day before you leave that you still haven’t checked the oil level of your car, gone to the bank, bought the extra socks you needed, set up the timer for your house lights, or had your mail held. There are countless vacation preparation checklists available online – download one ahead of time and check items off to reduce your preparation stress. 4. Pack In Advance This might sound overwhelming, since you’re already stressed and still trying to get into the vacation mindset. However, it’s important to remember to work toward your goal of relaxation in advance or you might never get there! Make or download a packing list and begin to assemble necessary items with plenty of time to spare. That way you won’t find yourself running around like crazy the night before trying to get everything together. 5. Get Plenty Of Rest Speaking of the night before your vacation, make sure to get plenty of sleep so that you do NOT travel tired. Certainly, rushing to get everything done before your vacation can leave you worn out. However, navigating unfamiliar roads or airports will be much more difficult and stressful when you are sleep deprived. 6. Know What Works For You You may have heard the tip to clean your house while you’re packing for a vacation so that you aren’t stressed about a mess when you return. While some people might benefit from a little prep work beforehand, it won’t necessarily make re-entry easier for everyone. For others, the prep only adds more stress. The same goes for work. Many folks stress about doing extra work before leaving in hopes of cutting down on the amount they have when they come back. But it seems like there’s always a lot of work when you get back, no matter how you prep. Prioritize and focus on those tasks that have a deadline while you’re gone and put non-pressing items on the back burner. 7. Supplement To Manage Stress Natural relaxation substances can be incredibly effective in helping you manage your stress and feel more calm. Drink some spearmint or chamomile teas. Put dried lavender in a vase near your bed. Use calming essential oil aromas such as clary sage, bergamot, or ylang ylang. Try BrainMD’s Everyday Stress Relief – a nutritional supplement that can help promote a tranquil mind and body while supporting healthy adrenal and cortisol levels. It includes well-studied herbs and nutrients to support your body’s response to stress on multiple levels.

9 Easy Ways To Boost Your Focus

9 Easy Ways To Boost Your Focus

The Focus Struggle Are you easily distracted when driving? Do you struggle to pay attention to boring tasks? Do you generally have problems focusing, or know someone who does? If so, you are not alone! Can you believe that research shows that humans have an attention span of only 8 seconds? This is less than a goldfish which loses focus after about 9 seconds It seems like evolution may be going in the wrong direction. In 2000, the human attention span average was estimated at 12 seconds, which is not great; but losing a third of our attention span in fifteen years is alarming! 9 Easy Ways to Boost Your Focus In today’s fast-paced, demanding, multi-tasking world, you need to be able to focus and pay attention in order to be successful. The good news is that there are countless strategies you can use to become more focused and have better attention – start with these 9. 1. Good, healthy food is brain medicine. For people who struggle with attention and focus, a healthy fat, high fiber, quality protein, low glycemic diet can have a powerfully positive effect on brain function. The sugar-filled, pesticide-laden, high glycemic Standard American Diet (SAD) leads to increased distractibility, decreased energy, and illness. It is especially important to eat protein with each meal and snack which helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and maintain focus. 2. Drink lots of water. Your brain is 80 percent water. Anything that dehydrates it, such as too much caffeine or alcohol, decreases your thinking and impairs your focus and judgment. Make sure you get plenty of water every day. To know you are drinking enough water for your brain, a good general rule is to consume half your weight in ounces per day unless there is significant obesity and then usually not more than 120 ounces a day. 3. Calm and focus your mind on mindful exercise. Yoga, tai chi, and other mindful exercises have been found to reduce anxiety and depression and increase focus. 4. Decades of research have shown that prayer, meditation, visualization, and self-hypnosis can calm stress; improve focus, mood, and memory; and enhance overall brain function. Taking 5 to 10 minutes twice a day to focus on your breathing, gratitude, a beautiful scene in nature, or scriptures is simple, yet can have a powerful effect on your life. 5. Used properly, music is medicine. Music can soothe, inspire, and help you focus. That is why Dr. Amen has teamed up with best-selling author and Grammy Award-winning composer, Barry Goldstein Music to compose pieces specifically designed to enhance mood, memory, energy, and focus. Other music to consider in order to improve focus is: “Just the Way You Are”: Bruno Mars Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K. 448: Mozart “Silk Road”: Kitaro 6. Neurofeedback has been shown to help improve focus, impulse control, and memory along with other cognitive functions. It helps your brain function better by retraining certain brainwave patterns. You essentially get to play a video game using just your mind. While doing it, a computer continuously monitors your brain’s function and provides feedback. It is through repetition that the brain can retrain itself; therefore, a neurofeedback program will involve multiple sessions, but it’s worth it. 7. Boost your attention span with BrainMD’s Attention Support containing natural focus boosters. All its ingredients were picked for their clinically proven benefits to attention, concentration, calm, and overall self-control. Working through multiple action pathways in the brain, Attention Support’s nutrients and herbals help your distractible brain stay on track. 8. Give yourself regular breaks. Many people equate taking breaks with wasting time, but research demonstrates that taking breaks actually improves our focus and efficiency. Our cognitive control system can often begin to fail after a while of focusing on a task. By switching our attention to something else briefly – in other words, by taking a break – we can then return to our original task refreshed and focus on it once again. 9. Get rid of distractions when you prepare to focus – close your email, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Put your phone on airplane mode and turn off anything that blinks, dings, buzzes, or vibrates. Although multitasking may seem like the best way to get things done, research shows that even people practiced at multitasking don’t do it very well.

Do You Have the Winter Blues?

Do You Have the Winter Blues?

Are you still in hibernation mode? That's OK. Everyone knows it feels better to cuddle up now, watch a movie, and drink a warm, frothy beverage when it’s cold outside or during your chilly rainy season. Many of us are feeling lethargic, fatigued, moody and maybe just a little bit lazy. Also, those thick woolly sweaters can hide your errant holiday resolutions. Why is Your Bad Mood Not Going Away? Signs of low winter mood can include: Negative or guilty thoughts Mental fogginess Purposefully avoiding social interaction Overeating and emotionally eating Periods of starving and bingeing Difficulty with concentration and memory Because most people write off these signs and behaviors as “just being down,” they don’t take proper care of themselves; they don’t believe they need to do anything about it. What Causes The Need to Hibernate? A variety of things can alter or change your cold-weather mood, but there are a few distinct reasons why a change in climate can be responsible for – or the catalyst for – your shift into bad moods. Decrease in Serotonin Activity As the weather changes, and your ordinary schedule is thrown for a loop, your brain's serotonin activity can decrease. As the brain neurotransmitter that plays a majority role in mood, serotonin falloff often is correlated to an upsurge in negative mood. Fluctuations in Melatonin Activity This hormone provides your body with normal sleep cycles, and ebbs (and flows) can affect your mood. When sudden drops in this hormone occur, mood and sleep can get out of sync and contribute to mood swings. If your melatonin activity is out of balance, a melatonin supplement may help you feel more balanced and clear. Vitamin D Deficiency When you’re spending less time in the sun, which is true for most people during the winter weather, we make less vitamin D in the skin. Low vitamin D is linked to low mood and higher perceptions of stress and anxiousness. How Can You Get Rid of Your Winter Blues? There are plenty of ways you can naturally boost your mood or help to alleviate the negative signs and feelings that come with the winter blues. Many of the negative feelings of winter blues are believed to be tied to lack of sunshine and UV rays, which results in the skin producing less vitamin D. One popular, proactive remedy to offset the moody blues is a "bright-light therapy" lamp or light box, which for some people helps combat moodiness, jet lag, and mood swings. They simulate noontime sunshine without the UV rays that can cause skin cancers; and the therapy lamps have several different settings to help you avoid eyestrain.  A more cost-effective alternative is to make sure you’re by a window with as much natural light as possible, for at least 30 minutes each day. Sweat to the Beat Try to maintain a healthy diet that fuels your more active lifestyle. Ramp up your will-power and adopt a moderate daily exercise routine. Also, be sure to stick to these healthy habits in order to maintain more even moods and a sense of mind-body balance. If you’re looking for a mood enhancing supplement, BrainMD’s Serotonin Mood Support and SAMe Mood & Movement 400 are both scientifically designed to support the brain mechanisms that promote positive mood and emotional balance during your hibernation months.   At BrainMD, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality supplements to improve your physical health and overall well-being. Serotonin, Are You Getting Enough?

Serotonin, Are You Getting Enough?

Brighten your mood and sidestep negative thoughts with serotonin and nutrients that can help promote calmness, satiation, and a more positive attitude. The human brain naturally produces a soothing neurotransmitter called serotonin, from before your birth and throughout your life. Serotonin plays many important roles in the brain’s biochemistry, and it’s intimately involved in sleeping, maintaining an upbeat mood, self-confidence, even supporting healthy appetite and social engagement. Are You Making Enough Serotonin Naturally? Here’s the thing, though: All-too many people don’t produce enough of this healthy property to experience the calming, positive effects. Plus, a deficiency may potentially affect depression and mood swings. Since serotonin also interacts in your intestinal tract, too-little of this chemical is closely associated with changes in gut health, body temperature and appetite. 8 Signs of Serotonin Deficiency Poor cognitive functioning Carbohydrate cravings and binge eating Constipation and digestive disorders Sleep problems and insomnia Feeling overwhelmed and unhappy Headaches Ringing in the ears Anger and irritability People who struggle with their moods often have very low levels of serotonin, says Daniel G. Amen, MD. Yet, serotonin can be increased in the brain (and body) by eating the proper foods and/or supplementing your diet.  Interestingly, he says certain nutrients can help metabolize and help utilize serotonin most efficiently. Some of these nutrients include magnesium, zinc, folic acid, fish oils, vitamins C and B6. Always ask your doctor about supplementing, especially if you have a chronic condition and take medication every day. Also, it is possible (though rare) to have too much serotonin, but that usually occurs when people mix over-the-counter supplements with prescription drugs. Be sure to communicate with your health practitioner. Balancing your serotonin levels may help minimize emotional overeating and sleeplessness. Our effective Serotonin Mood Support can also help brighten your mood and possibly fight off cravings, bad moods and daily anxiety.

How Hypnosis Can Help You Gain Mastery Over Your Mind

How Hypnosis Can Help You Gain Mastery Over Your Mind

Your brain is the most complex organ in the universe. It weighs about three pounds, or roughly 2 percent of your body’s weight, and yet it uses 20-30 percent of the calories you consume, 20 percent of the oxygen you breathe, and 25 percent of the blood flow in your body. What’s more, your brain is 85 percent water! We estimate that the brain has 100 billion nerve cells and more connections than there are stars in the galaxy. Your beautiful brain is the organ of learning, loving, and behaving. When the brain within a family or an organization work properly, for example, the family or organization tends to be positive and effective. When the brain of one or more family members or an organization is troubled, the family or organization may experience increased stress and strain. Hypnosis may help change all that. How Can Hypnosis Combat Negative Thinking? It’s simple. Negative thinking disrupts healthy brain function. And chronic stress also kills cells in the memory centers of the brain. Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help you gain mastery over your own mind and body. Hypnosis can also be helpful for sleep problems , as well as for anxiety and pain. Before trying hypnosis, your health professional will first help you eliminate anything that might interfere with optimal brain function and positive thinking: These include lack of sleep, drug abuse or alcohol, too much caffeine before bed, being sedentary, and simple tips like unplugging electronics before bed to allow for more restful and brain rejuvenating sleep. One Fascinating Case Study in Hypnosis I have used hypnosis as a tool to help many patients. When I was an intern at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center years ago, many of my patients wanted sleeping pills. As you can imagine, it’s hard to sleep in a busy, noisy hospital. Before I gave them the pills, however, I asked if I could hypnotize them first. Almost everyone agreed, and it was very helpful. Several of my first professional papers came from using hypnosis for sleep issues. One of my patients, a decorated World War II hero, had Parkinson’s disease and when he was in hypnotic trance for sleep, his intensive tremors went away. When I told the attending neurologist about it the next morning, he thought I was crazy. So, I repeated the exercise in front of the doctor, and the astounding results became my first clinical paper. Just as negative thoughts can make a body sick, promoting positive and nurturing thoughts (via hypnosis) can help you heal the brain. What Does It Feel Like to be Hypnotized? First, let’s admit that real hypnosis is definitely not the woo-woo Las Vegas trickster magician scenario, where he’s up on stage making his audience cluck like chickens just for laughs. Not at all. Hypnosis is another tool to help you (and other professionals) understand your brain. It is often accompanied by talk therapy, lab tests, and doctor’s visits. When you are under, some people claim being hypnotized is more like a heightened state of relaxation that helps you get more in touch with your unconscious. The term “hypnosis” may mean different things to different people, but it generally entails becoming fully relaxed by entering a trance-like state, then listening to a hypnotist as he or she communicate in a rhythmic, calming voice. Dr. Amen says hypnosis is quite effective for becoming much more aware of what your body needs. For one example, a small study from the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology found that women who were hypnotized for weight loss shed an average of 17 pounds within 6 months, compared to a mere half a pound in the control group. If you’d like to investigate how hypnosis can enrich your brain function, better induce sleep, help you with food cravings, smoking cessation – or just help you understand certain difficult situations with deeper clarity – ask your health professional to steer you to an appropriate pro.
