8 Premium, Branded Ingredients in BrainMD Supplements
When you walk into a vitamin store or the health section of a supermarket, you’ll see hundreds of vitamins and dietary supplements with different ingredients, amounts, and sourcing. But how can you really know if you’re getting a high-quality supplement or just a fancy label with cheap ingredients? There are many things to look for when purchasing a supplement, such as absorption, formulation, manufacturing, and testing. One way to help ensure you’re getting a quality product is to purchase supplements with branded ingredients. What Are Branded Ingredients? Branded ingredients are special, often proprietary, ingredients that are given a brand name by the manufacturer. These ingredients are also referred to as patented or trademarked ingredients and appear on supplement labels with symbols such as ™ or ®. When an ingredient is trademarked, it usually means the company has invested a great deal of time and money into establishing its quality and elevating its status among other ingredients of its kind. An ingredient might be branded due to its safety or purity or because of the way it’s processed (to be more bioavailable, have better taste, etc.). Benefits of Branded Ingredients Here are some of the top benefits of branded ingredients… Credibility Trademarked ingredients are typically backed by science and have head-to-head comparisons with generic versions, and sometimes even with other branded versions. When the science supports a manufacturer’s claims, it helps establish the ingredient’s quality and credibility. Efficacy Manufacturers of branded ingredients are under contract to their suppliers and must include the ingredient in the way the contract and scientific studies stipulate. Compliance is necessary to ensure the efficacy of the ingredient and to instill confidence in the consumer. Transparency Increasingly, consumers are demanding to know the traceability of the ingredients in the supplements they purchase. A well-researched branded ingredient can help provide transparency, educate the consumer, and offer higher manufacturing standards than its generic ingredient counterparts. Note: Due to the extensive research and financial investment required to formulate and manufacture branded ingredients, they typically cost a little more than supplements with non-branded ingredients. So, does BrainMD have any branded ingredients in its supplements? Glad you asked… 8 Premium, Branded Ingredients in BrainMD Supplements 1. affron® Standardized Saffron Extract A highly concentrated, standardized saffron extract, affron® is found to improve mood, anxiousness, and sleep quality in double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials. This highly concentrated and standardized nutraceutical extract of saffron is a spice that’s been used in the Middle East for at least 2600 years. Modern clinical research with this specific ingredient fully supports the traditional reverence for saffron’s mood-elevating effects. Which BrainMD supplement features this branded ingredient? Happy Saffron Plus was scientifically designed to promote a positive mood. It brings together nutraceutical preparations of the two most traditionally revered “happiness herbals” – saffron flower extract and curcumin from turmeric root – with zinc, a mineral essential for life and vital for a positive mood. 2. Ferrochel® Ferrochel® is a high-purity ingredient of iron atoms bonded to molecules of the amino acid glycine. Unlike iron sulfate, and many other iron compounds used in iron supplements, this form of iron is very gentle on the stomach. Though iron’s main health benefits are typically linked to hemoglobin, this essential mineral aids in energy production, gene regulation, and the body’s detoxification process. Which BrainMD supplement features this branded ingredient? Iron Advanced Ferrochel® Iron is so reactive, it can degrade other supplement ingredients. That’s why BrainMD offers iron as a standalone supplement, in its best tolerated and best absorbed form: ferrous bisglycinate, Ferrochel®. 3. Longvida® Optimized Curcumin Extract The turmeric root has paralleled saffron as an herbal greatly revered for its wide range of benefits for at least 2600 years. Consuming turmeric root doesn’t get much curcumin into the bloodstream, but nutraceutical technology has now overcome this problem. The Longvida® curcumin preparation features excellent absorption of curcumin and has worked well in clinical trials at 400 mg per day or higher. Besides being found to improve mood in clinical trials, Longvida® was recently shown to improve aspects of memory as well. Which BrainMD supplements feature this branded ingredient? Happy Saffron Plus & Brain Curcumins Brain Curcumins provides the three major curcumins as the Longvida® preparation, which is efficiently absorbed. Longvida® helps fight physical fatigue and helps maintain healthy mood and cognitive functioning while under mental strain. 4. Pycnogenol® Maritime Pine Bark Extract Pycnogenol® is a powerful antioxidant concentrate that promotes the delivery of blood to the brain. Intensive clinical research has established its benefits for attention and other higher brain functions in kids as well as adults. This authentic, standardized polyphenol extract comes from the French maritime pine (Pinus pinaster). Pycnogenol® is one of the most extensively researched of all herbal antioxidants. Which BrainMD supplement features this branded ingredient? Attention Support can help increase your attention span while helping you stay relaxed and calm. Its ingredients were picked for their clinically demonstrated benefits for attention, concentration, calm, and overall self-control. 5. Relora® Relora® is a proprietary botanical complex that’s been clinically tested to support calmness. In a double-blind clinical trial, this patented blend of two herbs, Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amurense extracts, reduced occasional feelings of anxiousness and stress in premenopausal women. Relora® can help enhance healthy management of the stress hormone cortisol, while easing apprehension, tension, worry, anger, fatigue, negative mood, and confusion. Which BrainMD supplement features this branded ingredient? Everyday Stress Relief was specifically formulated to help replenish your brain and body’s nutrients that can be depleted during times of excessive stress. This supplement includes herbal extracts clinically shown to have calming and anti-stress effects, helping you to feel less anxious without making you sleepy. 6. Satiereal® Saffron Extract Satiereal®, a patented extract of saffron, contains four compounds that have powerful antioxidant, brain-protective, and serotonin-enhancing actions. Saffron, which grows mainly in Europe and the Middle East, has been shown to benefit mood and memory. In clinical trials, Satiereal® was found to reduce feelings of hunger, while supporting appetite moderation and healthy weight management. Which BrainMD supplement features this branded ingredient? Serotonin Mood Support can help increase the production of soothing brain waves, correct stress-related nutritional deficiencies, and promote relaxation that will enable quality sleep. It contains a patented form of saffron (Satiereal®) along with other key nutrients that help to promote relaxation, positive mood, serotonin balance, and even healthy weight management. It can help you handle the ups and downs of life with more composure. 7. Sensoril® Ashwagandha Extract Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, root/leaves) is a well-known herb that’s been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that supports the body’s healthy response to stress by promoting calm and overall mental focus and has been associated with improved memory. Sensoril® is a highly concentrated, standardized form of ashwagandha. It’s been clinically studied for its mood- and memory-boosting properties. Which BrainMD supplement features this branded ingredient? Focus & Energy was designed to promote sharpness and improve productivity without lowering blood sugar. It’s formulated specifically to reinforce the brain and the body’s ability to fight fatigue and adapt to stress. Focus & Energy includes standardized, ultra-pure extracts of three powerful adaptogens: rhodiola, ashwagandha, and ginseng. 8. Vitakelp® This cold-water, brown seaweed is sustainably harvested off the Scottish Hebrides. It’s a good source of minerals, especially potassium, calcium, and magnesium. It also contains ascophyllan, a unique sulfur-containing carbohydrate that has immune activity. Which BrainMD supplement features this branded ingredient? Neuro Greens Superfood was developed from the latest scientific research on superfoods (foods especially rich with nutrients and other substances beneficial to human health). Learn moreDo You Have One of These Six Types of Anxiousness?
Anxiousness comes in many forms and may affect people in different ways. Low levels of anxiousness may cause some to take risks that can lead to injury or an early death. Healthy levels of anxiousness may keep some from driving too fast on a rainy night. High levels of anxiousness may lead to panic attacks, health problems, and destructive behaviors. As is illustrated in these hypotheticals, some forms of anxiousness are healthy, while some aren’t. When it comes to the negative aspects of anxiousness, there are several telltale signs to be aware of. Signs of Anxiousness Though it’s normal to have periods of stress or worry, persistent anxiousness can lead to serious physical and mental problems. Some common signs of anxiousness include: Nervousness/restlessness Worrying Muscle tension (stress related) Irritability/anger Attention issues Fatigue Difficulty sleeping Having all these issues may be an indication that you’re dealing with anxiousness. But even having a few of these types of anxiousness may be a cause for concern. One of the best ways to deal with anxiousness is to identify your type so you can seek appropriate ways to mitigate it. 6 Types of Anxiousness and How to Cope with Them Naturally Pure Anxiousness Those who struggle with this type of anxiousness tend to feel tense and nervous. They may often feel uncomfortable in their own skin. They can be plagued by panic and self-doubt, and these feelings may trigger muscle tension, nail biting, headaches, abdominal pain, a racing heart, or shortness of breath. Irrational fears or phobias are also common. People with this type of anxiousness tend to avoid anything that makes them uncomfortable, such as places or people that might trigger panic attacks or relational conflict. Also, they tend to predict the worst and may be fearful of the future. What Can Help? As with some of the other types of anxiousness, deep relaxation exercises, such as hypnosis, may be helpful for this type. Also, exercise and calming activities may be beneficial. Supplements that may help this type include GABA, magnesium, theanine from green tea, ashwagandha, Relora, vitamin B6, probiotics, and DHA omega-3 fatty acids. Anxiousness and Low Mood This type is a combination of occasional anxious and depressive thoughts. Though one type may dominate at times, both issues may be present on a regular basis. People with this type may be low in GABA or dopamine. What Can Help? Intense exercise sessions alternating with calming activities – such as tai chi, yoga, and relaxation techniques – may help this type. Certain scents, like lavender, can help promote calm. Supplements that may help this type are SAMe, GABA, magnesium, curcumin, vitamin D, probiotics, and a combination of EPA and DHA omega-3s. Overfocused Anxiousness This type is usually associated with low serotonin levels. It’s common for people with this type to get stuck on negative thoughts or compulsive behaviors (like constantly checking locks). This may be the result of too much activity in the brain’s anterior cingulate gyrus. This type is also associated with people who worry, hold grudges, and have problems with being oppositional or argumentative. They tend to notice what’s wrong before they notice what’s right. What Can Help? Boosting serotonin may help this type. Aerobic exercise is recommended. Also, a diet high in complex carbohydrates may help. Supplements for this type include 5-HTP, saffron, St. John’s wort, vitamin D, probiotics, and a combination of the omega-3s EPA and DHA. Temporal Lobe Anxiousness This type is often associated with low GABA levels and could be the result of a head injury. The temporal lobes are important for memory, mood, and emotions. When there are problems in this part of the brain, people tend to struggle with mood instability, irritability, memory problems, and dark or evil thoughts. These individuals might misinterpret comments as negative when they aren’t, have trouble reading social cues, and experience frequent déjà vu. What Can Help? A diet high in protein and fat, and low in carbohydrates, may be helpful for this type. Neurofeedback is an effective therapy that may help some people who struggle with anxiousness. The supplements that may help this type include GABA, magnesium, taurine, and EPA and DHA. Cyclic Anxiousness People with this type might have low levels of GABA, but they also might have too much of the excitatory chemical glutamate. As the name implies, this type is associated with cycles of anxiousness and low mood. It also may apply to those affected by seasonal mood changes or those who deal with mood swings. As with the other types, people with cyclic anxiousness may have a mild or severe form, or anything in between. This type also can get worse during periods of hormonal changes, such as after having a baby or during menopause. What Can Help? Possible treatments for this type may include improving diet and exercise and implementing deep relaxation techniques. The supplements recommended for this type are GABA, magnesium, taurine, zinc, vitamin B6, and EPA and DHA omega-3s. Unfocused Anxiousness This type results from too little activity in the brain’s prefrontal cortex (PFC). When the PFC is underactive, people may complain of low energy, mental fog, being inattentive, bored, impulsive, and exhibiting poor judgment. The decreased brain activity may be a result of an injury, toxic exposure (such as from mold or household products), infection, or underlying attention issues. What Can Help? The treatment for unfocused anxiousness starts with identifying and treating the cause of the low activity, then rehabilitating the brain with a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Supplements that may help stimulate and repair the brain include ginkgo biloba, L-tyrosine, rhodiola, and EPA fish oil. The good news is that regardless of which type you are, you can feel calmer and more relaxed with the right treatment. Learn moreThe 4 Most Effective Ways To Increase Your Serotonin
Do you often have negative thoughts racing through your mind? Do you notice that you are more lethargic, irritable, or sad for no reason? Our brain requires a balance of vital neurotransmitters that help to control our feelings of happiness or positive mood. You may have heard about dopamine, oxytocin, and endorphins as being contributing factors to feeling happy. Similar to these neurotransmitters, serotonin plays many important roles in the brain’s biochemistry and is intimately involved in facilitating sustained and deep sleep, maintaining healthy mood and self-confidence, even supporting a healthy appetite and social engagement. What Is Serotonin? Our brains produce a naturally soothing neurotransmitter called serotonin, from before birth and all through life. Serotonin is the key hormone that stabilizes our mood, feelings of well-being, and happiness. Additionally, it helps decrease our worries and concerns and is associated with learning and memory. "People who are clinically depressed often have very low levels of serotonin," says Dr. Daniel Amen, MD. Some studies suggest that women produce 52% less serotonin than men.¹ Levels seem to fluctuate with menstrual cycles, which may explain why women are more prone to depression. Less sunlight may also cause a drop in the neurotransmitter (chemical messengers that help the brain to function) serotonin, which in turn can initiate low mood. While serotonin levels may dip with less exposure to sunlight, many people suffer from low serotonin year-round. When your serotonin levels are too low you're more likely to become irritable, anxious, and perceive the world as unfriendly. You may feel moody, pessimistic, and have irregular appetite and sleep. The good news is serotonin can be increased in the brain (and body) by eating the proper foods and/or supplementing your diet. So how can we help to increase our own serotonin levels? 4 Ways To Increase Serotonin Naturally Here are 4 of the best strategies to increase your serotonin levels: Break a Sweat - Daily! Exercise is a serotonin intervention – it instantly boosts serotonin in your brain. By engaging in aerobic exercises like running or cycling, we can stimulate the release of serotonin and improve our overall well-being. Studies show that even just 30 minutes of moderate physical activity can increase serotonin levels.² So why not lace up those sneakers and hit the pavement? Yoga or Pilates are also great options for boosting serotonin as they combine physical movement with mindfulness practices that support mental health. Incorporating regular exercise into your routine can be a powerful way to naturally lift your spirits and enhance your quality of life. Multiple research studies have demonstrated that exercise is at least equally effective at increasing available serotonin as serotonin-enhancing medications are, and in some cases exercise is more effective. One study concluded that positive mood in individuals is a strong predictor of physical health.³ Consistent daily physical activity one of the best ways to improve your serotonin levels and your overall brain health. Keep Your Gut in Check Did you know that your gut health has a direct impact on your mood and naturally occurring serotonin levels? It's true! The bacteria in our gut play a crucial role in producing neurotransmitters like serotonin, which is responsible for regulating our mood. So, if you want to maintain a positive outlook and keep those feel-good chemicals flowing through your body, it's essential to take care of your gut. Luckily, there are plenty of simple ways to support healthy digestion and promote good gut health. Eating fiber-rich foods like fruits and veggies, drinking enough water throughout the day, avoiding processed foods and sugar, getting regular exercise, and reducing stress are all great strategies for achieving optimal gut health. By taking these steps to prioritize your digestive system's well-being, you'll be on track towards feeling happier and more balanced every day. Much of the serotonin in your body is produced in your gut, so strategies designed to optimize gut health and the production of serotonin could certainly go a long way toward optimizing your mental health. Make sure you are taking a quality probiotic, properly hydrating, and eating a brain-healthy diet. Eat The Right Foods Foods high in simple carbohydrates, such as pasta, potatoes, bread, pastries, pretzels, and popcorn, typically increase insulin levels and allow more tryptophan (the natural amino acid building block for serotonin) to enter the brain, where the brain cells can convert it to serotonin. The calming effect of serotonin can often be felt in within thirty minutes of eating these foods. This may be one of the reasons simple carbohydrates are so addictive. They can be used to make you feel happy, but can also cause high blood sugar levels that can contribute to memory problems over time. We recommend complex carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes, apples, blueberries, carrots, and garbanzo beans, as a healthier way to boost serotonin. Brain serotonin levels also can be raised by eating foods rich in l-tryptophan, such as: chicken eggs cheese turkey beef salmon and tuna tempeh beans lentils spinach and other dark leafy green vegetables pumpkin and chia seeds nuts Many people may unknowingly trigger cognitive inflexibility or mood problems by eating diets that are low in l-tryptophan. Interestingly, Dr. Amen states that "certain nutrients can help metabolize and help utilize serotonin most efficiently. Some of these nutrients include magnesium, zinc, folic acid, fish oils, vitamins C and B6." Try Natural Serotonin Supplements "Taking supplements that help maintain healthy levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin are important to maintaining a healthy mood." – Daniel G. Amen, MD BrainMD's Serotonin Mood Support was created specifically to promote multiple brain mechanisms that maintain healthy serotonin levels in the brain. This supplement contains essential nutrients and herbs that help boost serotonin production, such as Vitamin B6, B12, Folate, 5-HTP, as well as concentrates of saffron. If you are experiencing severe symptoms or have any underlying health issues, consult with a healthcare professional before taking any new supplements or medications. In Conclusion If you're looking for a safe and effective way to increase serotonin levels naturally while supporting overall brain health - try adding BrainMD's Serotonin Mood Support into your daily routine! Learn moreCalm My Brain: A Natural, Fast-Acting Way to Help Relieve Anxiousness
These days, it seems like everyone’s worried or on edge. Many people deal with stressful situations or anxious thoughts every day. Are you one of them? Stress and Anxiousness Stress is a response to an existing stress-causing factor (stressor). Anxiousness may be the result of intense, prolonged stress. These feelings may be disproportionate to the magnitude of the stressor and may continue well after the stressor is gone. Though stress and anxiousness are closely related, not all people who deal with excessive stress will experience feelings of anxiousness. However, anxiousness can be exacerbated by stress, which can be measured as elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Managing stress often will also lessen feelings of anxiousness. Relieve Anxiousness Naturally Properly managing your stress is a critical factor in preventing the many mental and physical problems that can result from occasional, extreme anxiousness. Many people who struggle with anxious thoughts and feelings can end up predicting the worst, avoiding conflict, and being plagued with self-doubt, fear, and panic. Having heightened worry or feelings of anxiousness can lead to physical problems too, like muscle tension, dizziness, pain, shortness of breath, and panic attacks. If you’re one of the millions of Americans struggling with feelings of anxiousness, the good news is that diet and lifestyle factors, like taking high-quality supplements, can help. Known as “the relaxation mineral,” magnesium plays an important role in hydration, muscle relaxation, energy production, regulation of adrenaline and overall sleep quality. Magnesium promotes a calm, balanced, and mentally focused demeanor. Ashwagandha (standardized root extract KSM-66®) The ashwagandha herb (Withania somnifera) has long been revered for its medicinal powers in Indian Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems in the Mediterranean, Africa, and China. As an adaptogen, it helps the body adjust to psychological or physical stress by promoting calm and overall mental focus. Ashwagandha has been associated with improved memory and attention, and also benefits feelings of anxiousness and sleep. L-theanine Extensive clinical research links this amino acid with the health benefits of green tea. L-theanine enhances relaxing alpha brain wave activity, reduces tension, and fosters a restful state without diminishing daytime alertness. Learn moreHere Are Some of the Best Health Benefits of Mushrooms
Mushrooms are a unique food that humans have been consuming for centuries. Some are delicious and healthy to eat, others can be mind-altering and potentially deadly. Health Benefits of Mushrooms Throughout history, certain mushrooms have been known as “Food of the Gods.” Today, we know that mushrooms contain the antioxidants glutathione and ergothioneine as well as other desirable substances thought to contribute to human health and well-being. Over the past several decades, mushroom consumption has been increasing in the U.S. This is likely due to the fact that mushrooms are a widely accepted ingredient in many different cuisines and they’re also desirable for their nutritional value. Edible mushrooms are low in calories, carbohydrates, fat, and sodium. They’re also cholesterol free. Additionally, they provide a lot of nutrients such as selenium, potassium, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin D, protein, and fiber. Their fiber types include glucans, known to be powerful immunity enhancers. Mushrooms are a healthy addition to any diet and can provide a variety of nutritional benefits. Mushrooms and Longevity A study came out this year that helps provide more evidence of just how beneficial mushrooms can be to our health. The study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1988-1994. In this study, over 15,000 participants beginning at an average age of 44 years were assessed for their mushroom intake and its relationship to dying from any cause during a study period of 19 years, on average. The researchers reported that those participants who consumed mushrooms had a lower risk of dying during this period. These researchers even concluded from this study, that replacing 1 serving of red or processed meat with 1 serving of mushrooms per day was associated with a lowered risk of death. They further reported that the higher the mushroom intake, the lower the risk of death. Mushrooms for Everyone If mushrooms can potentially help us live longer, healthier (and happier) lives, then maybe they really are an “elixir of life.” For those who like mushrooms, this is your cue to eat up! On the other hand, for those who don’t like to eat mushrooms, there’s some good news: you can find mushrooms in all shapes and forms these days. From teas and soups to supplements and powders, there’s something out there for everyone to enjoy the many health benefits of mushrooms. Learn moreSome of the Best Ways to Reduce the Stress Hormone Cortisol
Stress is prevalent in our society. A recent report from the American Psychological Association found that 84% of the people surveyed have been experiencing elevated levels of stress. Additionally, almost half of them reported mood issues, as well as weight changes and problems with sleep – conditions that often accompany being emotionally overwhelmed. Good Stress/Bad Stress Usually, people think of stress as bad…but stress is both good and bad. A little bit of stress is actually good because it can motivate you to meet your goals. Low level stress also can help you with resilience, problem solving, and adapting to everyday challenges. Stress becomes a problem when it’s intense, recurring, or remains unresolved over a sustained period. At that point, stress takes a toll and can become harmful to your health. If left unchecked, excessive stress can lead to serious personal and social consequences, including: Family conflict Low self-esteem Disability Withdrawal from social activities Alcohol and substance abuse Legal and criminal problems Anxiousness and other mental problems Suicide Fight or Flight The body’s “fight or flight” system is for dealing with threats – whether real or perceived. When we sense danger, our brain’s hypothalamus immediately sends an alert to our body. The brain then triggers the adrenal glands to release a surge of hormones, including adrenaline. Adrenaline increases your heart rate and blood pressure and provides a rush of energy to escape the danger. Another hormone involved in the fight or flight process is cortisol. What Is the Stress Hormone Cortisol? Cortisol is the body’s primary stress hormone. It acts like a biological alarm system, alerting your brain to potential danger. This natural alarm system communicates with the area of the brain that manages mood, motivation, and fear. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands – triangle-shaped organs that sit on top of the kidneys. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland help regulate the amount of cortisol in the blood. Cortisol receptors, found in the many of the body’s cells, use the hormone in many ways. For instance, if your body is placed on high alert, cortisol can temporarily shut down various bodily systems not needed in a fight or flight situation. These systems include the digestive, immune and reproductive systems. It also releases glucose to help repair damaged tissue. Once the danger is averted, cortisol levels gradually normalize and heartbeat, blood pressure, and other body systems should return to normal. However, if the body is subjected to consistent stress, its cortisol can remain at high levels. This can disrupt your body’s processes and create many health problems, such as: Brain problems Heart problems Headaches Mood issues Memory or concentration problems Weight gain Digestive issues Troubles sleeping Not only can excessive stress lead to physical health problems, it can also disrupt your mental health. So, what can you do if you’re dealing with too much stress? Here are some healthy strategies for reducing stress in your daily routine… 5 Natural Ways to Reduce the Stress Hormone Cortisol Deep Breathing Whenever you feel worried, frustrated, angry, or tense, do a deep breathing exercise. Focusing on your breathing for a few minutes is one of the simplest and quickest ways to settle your anxious or stressful thoughts. Breathe with your diaphragm rather than your chest. Try this exercise: Inhale 3 to 4 seconds Exhale 6 to 8 seconds Repeat this pattern 10 times When you slow down and become more efficient with your breathing, you may find that your problems aren’t as dire as you thought they were and that you’re feeling less stressed. Canine Companion Due to their natural ability to provide comfort, especially when you’re feeling stressed out, spending time with a dog can help your muscles relax, slow your breathing, and lower your heart rate. It also can help decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol.. Overall, dogs can help you feel calmer. This effect is evident in the way trained service dogs can bring positivity to people who suffer with mood issues. Having a dog provides companionship, which is especially helpful for anyone who lives alone or is often isolated from others. Petting a dog can help alleviate feelings of loneliness by letting you know you aren’t alone. Spending time with your pet can help promote calmness by increasing levels of oxytocin and decreasing production of the stress hormone cortisol. Owning a pet that needs to be walked means you’ll get outside for fresh air and sunshine, which can lower your blood pressure, reduce your stress, and perhaps even help you lose weight. Meditation Scientific evidence shows that meditation can help calm anxiousness and stress and enhance brain function. A randomized controlled trial involving 93 subjects with mood issues was published in JAMA Internal Medicine. The researchers found that those in a stress-reduction program that incorporated meditation had a greater improvement in anxiousness and stress along with an increase in positive self-statements compared to those in a stress management group without meditation. Another group of researchers, who conducted a study with 40 college students, found that after only 5 days of meditation the participants had significantly lower levels of cortisol. Social Connections Never underestimate the importance of being around the right people. The health habits of the people you spend time with may have a dramatic impact on your own health and habits. So, surround yourself with people who are happy, upbeat, and kind. Building and maintaining healthy relationships may help you feel understood and cared for. When you care for others and feel cared for, your brain can release oxytocin, the “bonding” hormone, which can counteract some of the negative effects of stress. Learn moreProBrainBiotics MAX Questions | What You Need to Know About Probiotics
Dr. Parris M. Kidd, our Chief Science Officer and Director of Quality, has a PhD in cellular and developmental biology from the University of California at Berkeley and 38 years of expertise in dietary supplements and integrative medicine. Today, we’re picking his brain on probiotics, getting the answers to your most pressing probiotic questions, and diving deep into the science behind our new broad-spectrum brain, immune, and gut probiotic supplement, ProBrainBiotics MAX. Read the full interview below. Probiotics Q&A with Scientist Dr. Parris Kidd Question 1: We know that our gut is intricately related to our health on many levels. We also know that most supplements require consistent daily intake for optimal results. Is this the case with probiotics, or can they be taken intermittently for occasional support and relief? “Probiotic supplements aren't likely to give immediate relief for intestinal problems. The live bacteria they supply have to settle in, reproduce and get to numbers that can become functionally significant in and amongst the trillions of other bacteria already in the gut. Probiotics are not drugs or even fast-acting nutrients. Think ecology – the human gut is a complex, intricate matrix of micro-ecosystems with bacteria as major players, and adjustments take time. It really takes well-designed clinical trials to inform us about the utility of any probiotic strain. In the case of BrainMD’s new broad-spectrum probiotic ProBrainBiotics MAX, the clinically documented benefits of the 7 strains – better brain, immune and gut health, better mood, better sleep, improved ability to cope with stress and anxiousness – are most likely to appear and expand over a period of weeks.” Question 2: Should you rotate your probiotic every 3-4 months for maximum benefit? “No. There’s no clinical evidence this is necessary or even helpful. With clinically-researched strains that are highly likely to improve overall microbiome functioning, as we've designed into this MAX product, the longer they're consumed the better the results likely will be. Don't believe everything you read on the internet.” Question 3: In the past, members of our team have shied away from taking probiotics due to adverse effects like bloating, gas, and intestinal discomfort after use. Will they be able to tolerate ProBrainBiotics MAX? “In my experience, the products most likely to have these undesired effects contain prebiotics – various forms of complex carbohydrates. It is not uncommon to experience gurgling or other intestinal discomfort after taking a probiotic + prebiotic product because the bacteria can go a bit crazy with all those carbs nearby. They can get very active and generate lots of gases, etc. ProBrainBiotics MAX doesn't have that problem because it doesn’t contain prebiotics.” Question 4: Speaking of prebiotics, is there any clinical research supporting their benefit? “Yes. But many so-called prebiotics aren't well researched in actual combination with probiotics. The prebiotic story is in theory pretty simple: good bacteria love to feed on fiber that the human gut cannot digest, and prebiotics are fibers of one type or another. The more fiber you consume, the better the environment for your probiotics. But prebiotics have to be very carefully chosen. Certain BMD products supply fiber that has proven prebiotic activity: the OMNI Protein products have 3 grams of fiber per serving, including 1 gram of inulin, which is an intensively researched prebiotic. Neuro Greens has 2 grams per serving of inulin and other prebiotic fiber, certified organic.” Question 5: What should you look for when choosing a probiotic supplement? “Clinical trial proof of benefit is so important for probiotic supplements. A probiotic strain can perform well in cultures, or in experimental animals, but the only way to know that it will consistently help people is to put it through clinical trials. As with any probiotic supplement – the good bacterial strains in PBB MAX face an uphill battle to produce health benefits. First, the tens of billions of good bacterial strains coming from our supplement each day are entering a gut milieu already populated by literally trillions of bad bacteria. Second, in the gut good bacteria are constantly being lost due to stress, toxins in foods, processed foods low in fiber and other nutrients, intake of alcohol or antibiotics or other drugs, and other negative factors. It’s a jungle down there – a micro-jungle, but jungle no less. This is why clinical trial proof of benefit is so important for probiotic supplements. Here are 4 things to look for: The Supplement Facts box must list them as strains, not just as species. For example, the species Lactobacillus helveticus has many different strains which have differing degrees of benefit. Lactobacillus helveticus strain Rosell®-52 has specific properties that make it beneficial, distinct from other strains of Lactobacillus helveticus. The strains that are used must have clinical research to support the benefits claimed for them. All 7 of the strains in BrainMD's probiotic products have shown specific benefits in clinical trials. The bacterial counts (CFUs, Colony-Forming Units) must be sufficient to cover the counts that worked in clinical trials. The benefits claimed for a probiotic product must be based on scientific research, most preferably on the expert consensus of results from human clinical trials that are randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled.” Question 6: BrainMD has two clinically researched probiotic supplements ProBrainBiotics and ProBrainBiotics MAX. Can you explain the difference between them? “ProBrainBiotics is a powerful probiotic supplement and a pioneering brain product for its time. With two clinically validated bacterial strains (Lactobacillus helveticus Strain Rosell®-52 and Bifidobacterium longum Strain Rosell®-175), ProBrainBiotics delivers psychobiotic support for coping with everyday stress and can especially benefit those with mood issues. ProBrainBiotics MAX is the next generation of ProBrainBiotics. With seven clinically validated bacterial strains (including both strains found in ProBrainBiotics), the total amount of clinical research support for the brain, gut and immune benefits of ProBrainBiotics MAX exceeds any other probiotic on the market. It goes beyond the brain.” Question 7: What does the research say about the long-term use of probiotics? Should we do a course every 3 months, every day, once a year? “While working on this project I became convinced that as a form of "nutritional health insurance" it's best to take a clinically verified probiotic supplement every day, along with a really good multiple vitamin-mineral and a clean, omega-3 concentrated fish oil.” Question 8: Is it also important to take digestive enzymes in addition to a probiotic? “Older people especially can benefit from digestive enzymes, and so can younger people who have damage to organs that make digestive enzymes, such as the pancreas. Plant enzymes are heavily promoted, but some of them are not potent enough to work well. Freeze-dried pancreas glandular preparations from pigs or sheep can be more potent digestive enzyme sources, given they are sourced from disease-free herds.” Question 9: Why do some probiotics require refrigeration while others do not? Does ProBrainBiotics MAX require refrigeration? “Probiotics are live bacteria, by definition. As time passes, some of them die. They're also sensitive to exposure to air, as occurs when the bottle is opened. Refrigeration slows these damage processes but can't stop them. ProBrainBiotics MAX doesn't require refrigeration – it contains extra bacterial cells to allow for loss over time when stored at room temperature. We also sealed the capsules individually in blister packs, to protect them from damage due to ongoing exposure to air.” Question 10: We loved your comprehensive explanation of the microbiome and what throws it off balance. (Tune in here if you missed it!) Can you expand on how toxins affect the microbiome? “Anything toxic getting into your mouth then getting swallowed can eventually come into close contact with your gut bacteria and damage or destroy some of them. Toxins entering the lungs can damage the delicate lung tissue and produce secondary toxins, which then enter the bloodstream and travel to the gut. It's very important to understand that every organ of the body is connected with every other organ (mainly by the circulation), so toxins generated anywhere in the body can travel to the gut and also hurt the microbiome. Think of your body as having a TOTAL TOXIC LOAD. Even creams and other stuff applied to the skin can become absorbed into the blood vessels under the skin and increase the toxic load. For optimal health – of your microbiome, and the rest of your body – you'll need to keep your total exposure to toxins to a bare minimum.” Question 11: Does antibacterial soap and hand sanitizer have adverse effects on the microbiome? “On the skin microbiome, probably yes. Many experts think antibacterial soap is not a good idea – they don't work, and they typically contain toxic chemicals like triclosan. Neither the soap nor the hand sanitizer should directly impact the gut microbiome. But it's possible that if you applied a lot of the sanitizer to your skin multiple times during the course of each day, some of it could get absorbed into your skin circulation and find its way to your gut.” BrainMD: Thank you, Dr. Kidd. We’ll stick to washing our hands with regular soap and water for 20 seconds as recommended by the CDC. Is there a question we haven’t answered? Please share it in the comments! Learn moreThe BrainMD Difference: Natural, High-quality Supplements
Why Supplement? In a society where eating fast or processed food, consuming massive amounts of sugar, skimping on sleep, drinking too much caffeine and/or alcohol and not enough water, and consistently passing up on exercise has become the norm, supplements aren’t just a good idea, they’re critical to supporting and optimizing your health. There are many reasons why taking dietary supplements should be a part of everyone’s daily health routine, including: Our life processes require vitamins, essential minerals, and conditionally-essential nutrients. Deficiencies can lead to illness and death. Practically everyone has genetic mutations or polymorphisms, which increases their need for specific nutrients. Stress (emotional, chemical, physical, infectious), alcohol, smoking, and many medications deplete nutrients from the body. Traditional medicinal plants, when standardized and tested, invariably have superior benefit-risk profiles compared to medications. Dietary supplements based in science can equal or surpass pharmaceuticals. They also help pharmaceuticals work better. One of the best explanations for the importance of taking supplements daily comes from Dr. Mark Hyman, who says: "If people eat wild, fresh, organic, local, non-genetically modified food grown in virgin mineral- and nutrient-rich soils that has not been transported across vast distances and stored for months before being eaten…and work and live outside, breathe only fresh unpolluted air, drink only pure, clean water, sleep nine hours a night, move their bodies every day, and are free from chronic stressors and exposure to environmental toxins, then it is possible that they might not need supplements.” The Nutrition Gap Numerous large population surveys have consistently documented that the foods currently available in the Standard American Diet (SAD) aren’t providing enough of the nutrients the brain and body need. Even if you try to maintain a healthy diet, many foods are so low in nutrients that there will always be a gap in nutrition. That’s where dietary supplements come in – they help fill the gaps in your diet with the nutrients you’re missing by only eating foods. However, supplements are NOT a cure-all. They can’t replace good habits such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, and stress management. But supplements CAN make solid contributions to a healthy lifestyle by giving your body added protection from the everyday assaults of the environmental, biological and chemical toxins that surround you, such as air pollution, pesticides, and the thousands of chemicals that generate dangerous free radical molecules. Supplements also can help bolster inflammatory response, protect your DNA, assist with healthy gene regulation, boost your immune system, improve your mood, and promote overall brain health. The Supplement Trap When you walk into a vitamin store or the health section of a supermarket, what do you see? Hundreds of vitamins and dietary supplements with different ingredients, amounts and sourcing…not to mention bottles in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. What’s the one thing they all have in common? They all claim to be the best. Of course, you realize they can’t all live up to their promise. But how can you find a quality dietary supplement amid the sea of inferior products? As you search for effective, high-purity supplements there are many pitfalls to avoid and many elements to consider: 10 Things to Keep in Mind When Purchasing Supplements 1. Absorption The digestive system must extract the vitamins and nutrients you need from food and supplements, but the body’s absorption of vitamins can be affected by several factors, including competition of digestion and the addition of other supplements. For example, sugar interferes with the absorption of vitamin C. Many supplement ingredients (such as magnesium oxide) are known to be poorly absorbed yet are used simply because they’re cheaper or take up less space in a tablet or capsule. 2. Additives Many supplements have fillers, which reduce their effectiveness and may even be harmful to your health. Some companies add agents to their supplements simply for cosmetic reasons, e.g., titanium dioxide for whiteness. Others include artificial dyes, some of which are linked to cancer. Some supplements, particularly those marketed to children, have substantial amounts of sugar added – take a look at the label for a gummy product. Many products that contain minerals have revealed lead contamination when tested. 3. Fad Supplements Perhaps you’ve seen fad supplements being sold on TV. Many of those products claim to have the backing of clinical trials, though often no such trials have been published in scientific journals. The makers of fad supplements can even stoop to adding drugs (pharmaceuticals) into their products labeled as dietary supplements, even though this is expressly prohibited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and can cause serious harm. If the supplement maker can’t show you controlled clinical trials published in peer-reviewed journals, proceed with great caution. 4. Formulation Just because a product has a certain ingredient in it doesn’t mean there’s enough of that ingredient in each dose proven (in clinical studies) to benefit people. A dirty little secret of the dietary supplement industry is that many products have less-than-proven amounts of ingredients – especially when those ingredients are expensive – to make it seem like the consumer is getting more for their money than with a competing product. Some in the industry call this “dusting” with “Fairy Dust.” Effective dietary supplements provide safe and clinically proven ingredients in doses that have reasonable probability of creating benefits for those who take them. 5. Labels & Claims Before you buy a supplement read the label, especially the Supplement Facts box which, by law, must list the active ingredients. Carefully read the directions for use and any cautions or warnings that follow them. Read the packaging and any claims for efficacy and/or safety that are on the label. The FDA prohibits supplement makers from claiming that their products “treat,” “diagnose,” “prevent,” or “cure” diseases, so carefully read the label to make sure it isn’t making any extravagant claims. 6. Manufacturing GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices) are the legal requirements for the minimal manufacturing system to ensure a dietary supplement product has the correct ingredient identity, strength, purity, safety, and process documentation that matches the content of its label. The cGMP (current GMP) regulations were developed by the FDA to ensure that dietary supplements are safe to take, by being manufactured to the highest quality possible from the available technology. If the product you’re considering wasn’t manufactured in a GMP certified facility, leave it on the shelf. 7. Marketing Outlandish claims in marketing materials can be an indication that the company is over-promising in order to boost sales. Look for realistic statements about a product for “supporting,” “promoting” or “enhancing” specific structures or functions. Everyone’s body works differently, so supplements are rarely one-size-fits-all. Be sure the supplement’s ingredients have been put through controlled human clinical trials, which are the highest level of proof that they possibly could work for you. 8. Quantity Not all supplements are created equal. The number of ingredients in dietary supplements widely vary, which is especially true of multiple vitamins. Some leading supplement companies take a minimalist approach, claiming that less is more. At BrainMD, we believe that more is more. We include all the vitamins and essential minerals that can be safely combined into one product. 9. Reviews Online reviews can be beneficial when they’re presented in an honest manner. Unfortunately, some websites, including well-regarded ones, pay people to create positive reviews. It can be a good sign to see some average or negative reviews since one supplement won’t have the same effect for every person. However, be cautious when a large number of reviews simply repeat the same claims for the product. 10. Testing Testing is most effectively done on the raw material ingredients before they enter the chain of production. But in-process testing is also necessary, and the finished product must also be tested to ensure the integrity of the entire manufacturing process. Many companies cut corners, so make sure your supplement has gone through identity and potency verification, heavy metal testing, and microbial testing. So, how can you really know if you’re getting a high-quality supplement or just cheap ingredients in a fancy bottle? Learn moreDoes MCT Oil Give You Energy? Here's How to Superfuel Your Brain & Body
The human brain requires lots of energy to function. Though only 2% of he body’s total weight, the brain uses at least 20% of the body’s total energy. The brain and body derive energy from many sources. One of the most potent sources of energy are the medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) from coconut oil. You’ll find high-quality, ultra-pure MCTs in BrainMD’s new quick energy supplement… Brain MCT Energy: Organic MCT Oil Brain MCT Energy is an oily dietary supplement that provides biochemical superfuels which rapidly boost the body’s energy generation, especially in the brain.* These are “good fats” that pose no threat to our health.* MCTs are easily digested in the intestine to make small fatty acids, which are efficiently absorbed. The liver readily converts these fatty acids from MCT into even smaller molecules called ketones, which all our cells can easily use for energy. Our cells get the bulk of their energy from biochemical “fires” stoked by mitochondria, tiny energy generators. The mitochondria use oxygen to convert nutrients from our foods into energy. Of all the nutrients the mitochondria burn, the easiest are ketones – small molecules derived from fatty acids (think of ketones as the kindling for our life energy). MCT are small natural fat molecules (triglycerides) of two kinds: caprylic acid triglyceride, consisting of fatty acids 8 carbons long (“C8”) combined with glycerol; and capric acid triglyceride, which has fatty acids 10 carbons long (“C10”) combined with glycerol. When taken by mouth, both are efficiently digested into their free caprylic (C8) and capric (C10) fatty acids, which are then readily absorbed. These small fatty acid molecules rapidly cross the intestinal lining and reach the large portal vein, which quickly delivers them to the liver. There, instead of being packaged into LDL particles along with cholesterol like larger fatty acids, they’re converted into ketones. These small molecules are then released into the circulation, to be picked up and burned in the mitochondria of any of our cells. MCT Oil and Brain Health The brain relies almost 100% on glucose (“blood sugar”) for energy generation, because that’s typically what it’s fed. But the brain is also capable of making energy from ketones, and even from the C8 and C10 molecules, that aren’t broken down in the liver. For people who struggle to get blood sugar into their brain, these MCT derivatives are a tremendous boon. Clinical research strongly suggests the brain loses its capacity to utilize glucose over time; this process may even begin for some in their youth. Fortunately, the brain seems to retain its full capacity to make energy from the C8 and C10 fatty acids, and especially the ketones produced from them, across the entire lifespan. In 2020, U.S. government researchers published a meta-analysis from 13 clinical studies with MCT. They concluded that MCT improved cognition, including memory. They noted that the higher the blood ketone level achieved, the greater the degree of cognitive benefit. MCT Oil and Exercise Taking an MCT supplement one or two hours prior to a workout supplies the skeletal muscles with ketones to help meet their increased energy needs. As the workout progresses and the muscle mitochondria burn ketones, the body may mobilize additional ketones from adipose tissue or other fat stores. As the ketone blood levels rise, some will be “pushed” into the working muscles and the brain. Findings from a recent controlled clinical trial suggest that taking MCT while on a moderate aerobic exercise program could be a useful tool for achieving higher blood ketone levels. Also, taking MCT lessened the blood sugar spike after consuming carbohydrates, which is consistent with clinical findings that suggest MCT may assist with blood sugar balance. MCT Oil and Appetite Satiety occurs when a person starts to feel full while eating a meal. A dietary supplement that promotes satiety is useful for those who want to reduce their caloric intake by consuming less food. MCT has shown promise for increasing satiety and lowering appetite, which can help reduce caloric consumption. And while MCT can lessen appetite, they also can increase the body’s burning of fat. The body must use energy to process food once it’s consumed. This process is called diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT). Clinical trials spanning more than 30 years have now clearly established that taking MCT increases DIT, mainly by increasing the body’s rate of fat-burning. Though the MCT acceleration of fat-burning and DIT hasn’t been shown to translate directly into weight loss, some of the clinical trials suggest that supplementing with MCT can assist with maintaining a stable weight. By enhancing satiety, MCT can be helpful for curbing unhealthy eating and stabilizing body weight. Learn moreWhich of the 16 Brain Types Are You?
The more you know about your brain, the better you can optimize it. 5 Primary Brain Types Explained Dr. Daniel Amen has identified 16 Brain Types based on his brain imaging work. In Part 1, we took a deep dive into the 5 primary Brain Types. Our focus now shifts to the 11 combination Brain Types along with the distinguishing characteristics, diet plan, and supplement recommendations for each type. But first, a brief recap of the 5 primary Brain Types: Brain Type 1 Individuals with Brain Type 1 typically show full, even, symmetrical activity throughout the brain, with the most activity in the cerebellum – one of the brain’s major processing centers. People with Brain Type 1 tend to live longer because of their high level of conscientiousness. They show up on time and follow through on tasks. They usually don’t take big risks and play by the rules. Although Brain Type 1 is the optimum brain type, the “use it or lose it” rule applies. Brain Type 2 Individuals with Brain Type 2 usually show lower activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in brain scans. The PFC is the brain’s brake system. It can help people think before they speak or act. Brain Type 2 may be associated with lower activity of dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved with focus and motivation. People with this Brain Type are likely to need excitement or stimulation to stay focused. Smokers and heavy coffee drinkers also tend to fit this type, as they use these substances to stimulate their brains. Brain Type 3 Individuals with Brain Type 3 are often tenacious, persistent, and sometimes stubborn. They tend to struggle with worry, have trouble sleeping, and like things to be done a certain way. Those with Brain Type 3 often have increased activity in the front part of the brain called the anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG). The ACG influences your ability to “go with the flow.” When the ACG is overactive, probably due to low activity of serotonin, people can have problems shifting attention. People with Brain Type 3 don’t need more stimulation. In fact, caffeine and diet pills tend to make them worse. Brain Type 4 Brain Type 4 individuals tend to show increased activity in the limbic (or emotional) centers of the brain, making them highly sensitive and empathic, but also subject to mood issues. People with this Brain Type may struggle with constant negative thoughts and pessimistic tendencies. Brain Type 5 Brain scans of individuals with Brain Type 5 often show heightened activity in the anxiety centers of the brain, such as the basal ganglia, insular cortex, and/or amygdala. This is probably linked to lower activity of the neurotransmitter GABA, which helps calm the brain. People with this brain type tend to be motivated toward a goal. They can feel intense pleasure, but also struggle with feeling anxious or nervous, which causes them to be more cautious and reserved, but also more prepared. Now, here are the 11 combination Brain Types… Here Are the 11 Combination Brain Types – Character Traits and Lifestyle Recommendations Core Character Traits for Brain Types 6-16 Individuals with Brain Types 6-16 typically show lower activity in the PFC. The PFC can keep them from saying or doing things that aren’t in their best interest. It also can curb creative, out-of-the-box thinking when it works too hard. Studies show that Brain Types 6-16 may also be associated with lower dopamine levels. People with this Brain Type are likely to need excitement or stimulation to stay focused. Those with Brain Types 6-16 can be strong-willed, choosy, and persistent. They may struggle with worry and have sleep issues. In addition, people with Brain Types 6-16 often have increased activity in their ACG. As the brain’s gear shifter, the ACG is involved with mental flexibility. An overactive ACG can create attention issues or harmful thoughts and behaviors. Core Diet Plan for Brain Types 6-16 Proteins: Protein-rich foods provide amino acids our body needs to create neurotransmitters such as serotonin (to boost mood, motivation, and positive thinking) and dopamine (to maintain focus, increase learning, and manage emotional reactions).* Regularity of protein (every few hours) provides satiety, balanced blood sugar, and can help prevent mood issues.* Easy snack options: small apple with almond butter blueberries with walnuts small protein smoothie Eat some form of protein at every meal or snack. Meals should include pasture-raised, organic chicken, fish, beef, lamb, hemp, eggs, or a plant-based protein powder. Carbohydrates: Focus on getting most of your carbohydrates from vegetables by adding them to meals whenever possible. Other carbohydrates should be low-glycemic, high-fiber, unrefined, and organic whenever possible. Prebiotic fibers: leeks, onions, raw garlic, sunchoke, raw chicory root, raw asparagus, raw dandelion greens. Vegetables: 6-8 servings per day Whole fruits: 1-2 servings per day Gluten-free whole grains: 1 serving per day (wild/brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, millet, amaranth, gluten-free whole oats, and teff) Hydration: drink at least half your body weight (lbs.) in ounces of filtered water each day. Learn moreHow to Kick Your Sugar Habit Using Fish Oil
You don’t have to be eating decadent cakes, processed candies, sugary sodas, and pints of ice cream to be eating large amounts of sugar, commonly in the form of corn syrup. You might be surprised to notice corn syrup in the ingredients of food such as bread, frozen pizzas, macaroni & cheese, cereal bars, cocktail peanuts, tonic water, salad dressing, apple sauce, and ketchup. In our fast-paced lives, it is very difficult to avoid the myriad of foods that contain fructose. Even when we think we are feeding our families “healthy” food, it can still contain ingredients that have been found to be harmful. So how can we finally kick sugar cravings to the curb? The good news is, studies have shown there are other nutrients that may help with the effects of fructose. Research: How Fish Oil Can Help You Kick Sugar Cravings The omega-3 fatty acids EPA (EicosaPentaenoic Acid) and DHA (DocosaHexaenoic Acid) have a wide range of profound health benefits, from supporting heart and joint health to promoting healthy cognition and mood. However, new research reported in an article entitled, “Systems Nutrigenomics Reveals Brain Gene Networks Linking Metabolic and Brain Disorders,” which appeared April 21 in the journal EBioMedicine, demonstrates a new one. The study by researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), showed that DHA can reverse the harmful alterations to hundreds of genes that are produced by excessive consumption of fructose, especially in the form of high-fructose corn syrup. High-fructose corn syrup is commonly found in soda, condiments, desserts, applesauce, baby food, and other processed snacks. What is worse is that, according to the US Department of Agriculture, the average American consumes more than 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of high-fructose corn syrup per year. The new research demonstrated that consuming a lot of fructose in the diet can actually change the expression of hundreds of genes, including genes that may lead to a greater predisposition toward metabolic diseases such as diabetes, and brain disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Alzheimer’s disease. Excitingly, it was additionally demonstrated that DHA largely reversed the fructose-induced changes in the brain. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is essential to the brain and can be found in fatty fish, such as salmon, as well as in walnuts, flaxseed, and omega-3 fatty acid supplements. The brain and the body are not able to manufacture DHA; it has to come through our diet. The scientists tested the effects of fructose and DHA in a group of rats that were trained to escape from a maze and then were randomly divided into three groups. For the next 6 weeks, one group of rats drank water with an amount of fructose that would be approximately equivalent to a person consuming a liter of soda per day. Rats in the second group were given fructose water and a diet rich in DHA, while the third group drank water without fructose and ate no DHA. After the six weeks, the rats were again put through the maze. The rats that had received only the fructose were about half as fast at finding their way out as the rats that were given only water, suggesting that the fructose had impaired their memory. The rats that had been given DHA and fructose navigated the maze at about the same speed as the group that had only had water, strongly suggesting the DHA eliminates the harmful effects of the fructose. Furthermore, the research team sequenced tens of thousands of genes in the rats' brains and identified more than 900 genes, the vast majority of which are comparable to genes in humans, which were altered by the fructose. Some of the conditions that can be caused by alterations to those genes are depression, Parkinson's disease, and bipolar disorder. Historically, the focus regarding the effects of high-fructose corn syrup has been about weight gain and obesity, but this study shows that a high-fructose diet not only harms the body but harms the brain as well. It also highlights yet another phenomenal health benefit of ensuring that you are getting enough omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. Learn moreWhat Supplements Can Help Me Get Better Sleep?
How much sleep did you get last night? Though not the best conversation starter, that question is extremely important. And the ramifications of the answer can have far-reaching consequences for your overall health. According to the Institute of Medicine, (US) Committee on Sleep Medicine and Research, as many as 70 million Americans have serious sleep problems, which can interfere with daily functioning. Unfortunately, sleep issues are progressively getting worse with the proliferation of gadgets and bad habits. Getting inadequate sleep has been associated with lowered brain efficiency, which can negatively affect your: Mental focus Mood Energy Weight Decision-making Anything that disrupts your natural sleep pattern, like excessive caffeine, alcohol or video game playing, can have adverse effects on your ability to effectively perform tasks at work, school or home. Insufficient and inconsistent sleep can increase irritability, moodiness and poor judgment. To remain at the top of your game, it’s recommended that you get between 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Get the Rest You Need Since sleep is one of the most important factors of brain health, BrainMD developed a selection of calming, relaxing, and sleep-inducing supplements that contain the best-utilized, ultra-pure nutrients and herbal ingredients to help you wind down at the end of a busy day. GABA Calming Support GABA Calming Support is a unique combination of clinically proven ingredients that can help you cope with restlessness, irritability and other challenges associated with occasional anxiety.* It contains ingredients that help your nerve cells respond better to GABA.* This formula can help calm your racing thoughts to help prepare you for sleep; it doesn’t cause drowsiness, so it’s safe to take during the day.* It includes: GABA – gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the body’s main calming neurotransmitter. It supports the body’s natural mechanisms for quieting the mind and gradually falling asleep. L-Theanine – working mainly by way of GABA receptors on nerve cells, this unique amino acid can have calming and relaxing effects while preserving mental focus. Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) – a member of the mint family that has been used as a medicinal herb for over 2000 years, lemon balm increases GABA activity in the brain as well as the activity of acetylcholine, a major neurotransmitter that promotes mental focus. Magnesium – magnesium plays important roles in mind and body relaxation, the calming of racing thoughts, and in promoting overall sleep quality. Research suggests that magnesium’s calming effects are enhanced by vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 – also known as pyridoxine and pyridoxal-5-phosphate, vitamin B6 helps the brain produce the neurotransmitter serotonin, which helps promote relaxation and enhance your mood. GABA Calming Support can help facilitate the production of calming brain waves, correct stress-causing nutritional deficiencies, and promote relaxation.* Magnesium Chewables Magnesium is a mineral nutrient essential for over 300 enzymes and is fundamental to your health. Sadly, due to the Standard American Diet (SAD), magnesium is one of the minerals most people typically don’t get enough of in the foods they eat. BrainMD’s Magnesium Chewables are sugar-free and have a delicious citrus flavor. Each tablet provides 150 milligrams of magnesium, more than one-third of your daily requirement. These chewable vitamins include: Magnesium – the three magnesium compounds (magnesium citrate, magnesium malate, and magnesium glycinate) are pre-activated and ready for use by the brain and other organs. These magnesium compounds are well tolerated, safe to take long-term, and can be used by people of all ages. Magnesium Chewables tablets help your muscles and your mind relax, promote positive mood and calm, and help you get quality sleep.* Restful Sleep Restful Sleep contains the body’s own sleep hormone melatonin to get you to sleep and keep you asleep through the night.* It also includes the calming neurotransmitter GABA, as well as magnesium, vitamin B6 and valerian. Together, these nutrients produce a soothing effect that can help ease you into a peaceful sleep.* These capsules include: Vitamin B6 – vitamin B6 helps with the production of neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, epinephrine, GABA), which need to be balanced for healthy sleep. Magnesium – sometimes called “the relaxation mineral,” magnesium plays an important role in energy production that helps with muscle relaxation, in lowering stress hormone production via the HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary axis), and in enhancing GABA action to allow for sleep. Magnesium helps calm the mind and enhance overall sleep quality. GABA – GABA is the major neurotransmitter for inducing calm by inhibiting excessive firing of neurons. Valerian – an herb used traditionally for centuries for its calming and sleep-inducing effects, valerian contains GABA and may also work closely with brain GABA receptors to help calm brain activity. It supports deep, restful, quality sleep. Melatonin – melatonin is the hormone naturally produced by the brain to initiate sleep and carry you through your daily sleep/wake cycle. It promotes restful sleep and healthy sleep patterns. Restful Sleep eases you to sleep and helps you stay asleep all night so you can wake up feeling refreshed in the morning.* Serotonin Mood Support Taking BrainMD’s Serotonin Mood Support can help correct stress-related nutritional deficiencies, promote positive mood, and help curb emotional eating.* It can help you handle the ups and downs of life with more composure.* This formula supports important brain neurotransmitter systems that positively influence mood.* Its ingredients include: 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) – this nutrient is readily converted to serotonin, the neurotransmitter that is a major mood regulator. Serotonin circuits may also increase the activity of dopamine, also associated with positive mood. Vitamin B6 – vitamin B6 is needed by the enzyme that converts 5-HTP to serotonin, as well as for making dopamine. It is also essential for the body to utilize proteins, fats and carbs. Methylfolate – methylfolate is the most active form of the folate vitamin, which is crucial for maintaining positive mood. Methylfolate is pre-activated folate and is better utilized than folic acid, which is a manufactured substance not found in nature. Methylfolate bypasses the common mutation called C677T, which folic acid cannot do. Vitamin B12 as Methyl-cobalamin – the body’s most readily-utilized vitamin B12, not cyano-cobalamin which contains toxic cyanide. This formula has sufficient methyl-B12, which backs up methylfolate in the brain and other organs, to ensure neurotransmitter balance favorable to healthy mood. Saffron – the world’s most expensive spice, saffron has a long history of being used to induce happiness and has consistently improved mood, stress, and other mental functions in many clinical trials. Lifestyle habits such as mind-body relaxation techniques, healthy dietary routines and daily use of Serotonin Mood Support, can work together to elevate mood and promote restful sleep.* At BrainMD, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality supplements to improve your physical health and overall well-being.
